Orban Hints At Ukrainian Sabotage Behind Hungary Refinery Fire
A lot of questions and suspicions were immediately raised when on October 21 explosions and fires occurred at large oil refineries in Hungary and Romania. Eyebrows were raised given that both sites have links to Russia.
The Petrotel-Lukoil refinery in Ploiesti (owned by Russian company Lukoil) in southern Romania was damaged, while in Hungary a 'mystery' fire also occurred at the country's largest oil refinery (the MOL-operated Danube Refinery), located in the city of Szazhalombatta - some 17 miles from Budapest - which receives crude oil from Russia.
Despite long efforts of the European Union to phase out Russian energy, a tiny number of states still receive supplies. This is why many have suspected sabotage, possibly linked to Ukrainian intelligence, was behind the twin refinery fires, which had occurred within less than 24 hours apart.
But now, over a week later, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has revealed in a soci...

US Steps Up Pressure On Hungary To Cut Off Russian Oil
Authored by Tsvetana Paraskova via Oilprice.com,
The U.S. is increasing pressure on Hungary to cut off its reliance on Russian oil imports and vows to work with Hungarian authorities and neighboring countries to help Budapest wean off Russian supply, a senior U.S. diplomat says.
Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, rejected in a Fox News interview suggestions from Hungarian politicians that the U.S. is giving Hungary a pass to continue importing Russian oil.
“Hungary, unlike many of their neighbors, has not made any plans or made any active steps,” Whitaker told Fox News in an interview.
“So we're going to continue to work with them and we're going to work with their neighbors like Croatia, and other countries that can help them wean themselves off,” the Ambassador added.
The U.S. official made clear that the United States expects Hungary to cut off Russian oil imports in the future and come up with a plan t...

Hungary Scrambles To 'Circumvent' US Sanctions On Russian Oil Majors
Via The Cradle
Hungary is seeking to circumvent new US sanctions on Russian oil companies in an effort to avoid disruptions to the country's energy supplies, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.
In press statements, Orban emphasized that banning cheap and reliable oil and gas from Russia would significantly increase the energy bills of the Hungarian people. "We are still fighting. So, we haven't lost the battle yet. We need serious maneuvers. We need leadership that will defend this. We are being pressured."

Hungary relies heavily on oil transported through the Druzhba pipeline from Russia through Ukraine and Slovakia. MOL Group, which operates refineries in Hungary and Slovakia, processes 14.2 million tons of Russian crude oil a year.
Orban said he has spoken with MOL Group about the sanctions, which come into effect in November. "We are working on how to circumvent this sanction," he...

Slovakia Sides With Hungary Against Trump's Russian Oil Phase-Out
Authored by Owen Evans via The Epoch Times,
Slovakia has pushed back on U.S. President Donald Trump's demands to curb Russian oil imports, aligning itself with Hungary.
“We don't have any other options which could be sustainable and also for the price to be reasonable,” Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar told Reuters during an interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 24.
“It takes time to diversify this. So that's why we are calling for some kind of empathy.”
He said that sanctions had not worked to change the course of the Russia–Ukraine war, which started in 2022.
Since then, the European Union has managed to reduce much of its reliance on Moscow's energy, but has yet to turn off the taps.
Hungary and Slovakia are the two EU members that still mostly depend on Russian oil delivered via the Druzhba pipeline. Both countries are keen to keep Russian supplies flowing despite EU efforts to d...
